THE MAASAI PROJECT
A FOOTWEAR LINE DESIGNED AND MANUFACTURED IN KENYA BY WOMEN OF THE MAASAI TRIBE, ONE OF THE PLANET'S MOST THREATENED
The non profit ADCAM (www.adcam.es) and Pikolinos are teaming up for the Maasai Project, in which more than 1,600 Maasai woman use traditional craftsmanship to hand-embroider leather sent from Spain for shoes and bags. Once decorated, the leather is returned to Spain where the shoes are finished.
For the first time, the Maasai women are earning a salary that allows them to improve the quality of life of the entire community while holding on to their traditions and lifestyle. It is a stable source of income that gives them access to food and medicine, as well as to education for the youngest members of their tribe.
ANOTHER WORLD IS POSSIBLE
With this fourth collection of Maasai-design sandals, Pikolinos takes its vision of corporate social responsibility further, demonstrating its interest in working with those most in need and in being pioneers in the pursuit of fair trade development.
The company is building bridges of hope that unite Africa with the rest of the world. What's more, full profits from the sale of these shoes will go toward development projects in the Maasai Mara National Reserve.
THE NEW YORK-BASED MODEL, FASHION CONSULTANT, AND BUSINESS WOMAN HAS BEEN NAMED THE MAASAI PROJECT AMBASSADOR
Last October, the ambassador for the Maasai collection, Olivia Palermo, visited the Maasai Mara Reserve to see the work of the Maasai women for herself. During that trip, the Summer 2013 campaign was shot, under the direction of Johannes Huebl.
